Overview
The Vermont Afghan Alliance is a nonprofit based in Burlington, VT that supports newly arrived Afghans (since August 2021) in Vermont. We rely on grants and the generosity of individuals and foundations to support our work. The Vermont Afghan Alliance seeks a part-time Program Officer to support the expansion of its driving program to better serve Afghan women in learning to drive and obtaining a Vermont drivers license.

Salary and benefits: $33,000 (Part time - 60% of $55,000)

Full health insurance coverage as well as pro rata paid vacation, sick and family leave.

Overview, Duties and Responsibilities

The Vermont Afghan Alliance seeks a part-time Program Officer to support the expansion of its driving program to better serve Afghan women in learning to drive and obtaining a Vermont drivers license. The part-time Program Officer will join the staff of the Vermont Afghan Alliance, working a flexible 24 hours per week or 60% schedule. The part-time Program Officer position is a 1-year position/contract from the date of hire with the possibility of renewal.

Primary responsibilities include:

• The Program Officer for driving services will be primarily responsible for providing driving lessons to Afghan women using the Alliance’s drivers education vehicle. The Program Officer will also support Afghan women in their road test(s) to obtain their Vermont driver’s license.
• The Program Officer working with other Driving Program staff will help meet quarterly and annual goals in assisting Afghan men and women in successfully learning to drive.
• Time permitting, the Program Officer may also assist with interpretation needs of Afghan clients, particularly (but not solely) interpretation related to accessing driving-related needs.
• The Program Officer will complete training program(s) for drivers education instructors and provide training to Afghan women on Vermont motor laws.
• The Program Officer will be responsible for proper data management, including the handling of sensitive personal or confidential information, proper intake and registration of Afghan women seeking driving services as well as data collection consistent with grant requirements.

Desired Experience and Education:

• Proficiency in English and Dari and/or Pashto
• Comfort with or understanding of the cultural needs and expectations of Afghan women.
• Prior education or professional experience in driver’s education, teaching, or social work.
• Prior experience working in a non-profit environment.
• An excellent driving record and ability to provide instruction.
• Experience working as an interpreter.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work and thrive in a multicultural environment, across language barriers and cultural traditions.
• Familiarity with WhatsApp, Gmail and Google Calendar.
