Job Description

Open Rank, Tenure Track "Co-Creation in the Arts" Cluster Hire

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Located on the 68th Street campus on the upper east side of Manhattan near many major cultural institutions, Hunter College offers scholars and creative artists a vibrant and dynamic community within a highly diverse urban setting. As part of the City University of New York, a nationally recognized metropolitan university system, Hunter is committed to active engagement with students and the community at large, and embraces equity, inclusiveness, and global awareness in all dimensions of our work.

The School of Arts and Sciences at Hunter College (CUNY) invites applications for a cluster of three new open rank, tenure track faculty positions united by an interest in "Co-Creation in the Arts." The ideal candidates will have an artistic practice that bridges two or more of the following disciplines: Visual Art, Dance, Film and Media, Music, and Theater. In addition to co-creating across arts disciplines, we are interested in candidates whose practices involve collaborating with the kinds of diverse communities that make up our student body. Candidates should have an ongoing artistic practice that emphasizes collaboration, interdisciplinary approaches, and a dedication to creating meaningful social impact. They must demonstrate proven leadership in fostering innovation, guiding collective creativity, and envisioning transformative possibilities through the arts. The cluster hires will help connect the college to the city through artistic practice and experimentation that allows us to build and sustain networks and create new understandings and imaginaries. We are particularly interested in applicants whose work centers on BIPOC communities and engages with the experiences of Hunter College?s diverse, largely first-generation student body.

Of these three positions, one hire will focus on musical theater, one hire will be housed in the Dance Department, and a third will be pulled from candidates who are broadly working in art and media. Each faculty member will be primarily housed in one department but will be expected to co-teach and cross-list in other arts disciplines at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

With this initiative, Hunter College elevates its commitment to creating an "anchor

institution" that serves the city of New York by educating artists and creative professionals whose work has a transformative impact on the world.

Possible Host Departments:

Each faculty member hired through this initiative will be appointed to an arts department in the School of Arts and Sciences that will serve as their primary home for teaching,

promotion, and tenure. The five departments are:

Art and Art History

The Hunter Art and Art History Department is a union of three distinct areas-Art History, Studio Art and the Galleries-each with a strong faculty and staff. Students can practice many media, can study art history and theory, and can help curate shows and write catalog essays, gaining practical experience as well as knowledge. This holistic approach, seeing the department as a manifold of activities and study opportunities students can selectively engage and take advantage of, is a distinctive aspect of studying at Hunter. The urban environment is inherently conducive to fostering the department?s triadic, holistic aspect of study: the global art world-an integration of production, curation, and historical

analysis-is at our doorstep and is part of daily life at Hunter. The faculty actively uses our art-rich environment to meet our learning goals and shape our courses to incorporate an engagement with our environment.

Dance

The Hunter College Dance Department offers and supports programs in Dance Performance/Choreography and Dance Education: a BA and MFA in Dance, a BA in Dance Education with New York State PreK-12 certification, an MA in Dance Education with New York State PreK-12 certification, a Post-Master's Advanced Certificate in Dance Education with New York State PreK-12 certification, and the MSEd in Educational Leadership.

Our curriculum provides students with a strong foundation that can lead to professional careers for performers, creators, scholars, educators, and arts advocates. From a campus in the heart of New York City, the Dance Department faculty and guest artists/scholars are active leaders in the field. The cultural diversity of the student population, the active, professional faculty, and the wide range of program opportunities make the Hunter College Dance Program a dynamic place to study Dance.

Film and Media Studies

Hunter College?s Department of Film & Media Studies offers two undergraduate programs of study. One program leads to a BA in Film, combining film history and theory with film production. The other culminates in a BA in Media Studies, and combines critical media analysis with creative practice using a mix of contemporary media forms (video, print, digital graphics and the Internet). The curriculum also includes a minor in Journalism.

Our Integrated Media Arts (IMA) MFA focuses on politically and socially engaged creative work and the social role of media and technology. Our program educates multi-disciplinary media artists and professionals, competent in a diverse range of media skills including documentary, hybrid and experimental video, 2D and 3D animation, installation, and interactive and web-based practices.

Music

In Hunter College?s Music Department, we have approximately 100 undergraduate B.Mus. and BA music majors, and 60 graduate MA students, with concentrations in Composition, Ethnomusicology, Music History, Music Theory, Performance, and Music Education. Classes for majors rarely include more than twenty students, and significant individual attention is given to each student in the classroom. In addition to academic courses and private lessons, the Music Department presents numerous events each semester, including concerts, guest lectures, master classes, conferences, and festivals.

Through our varied courses and numerous performances, the department seeks to enrich the musical lives of not only Hunter students, but all members of the Hunter community. In our performance ensembles and classes we teach students listening and analytical skills, historical context, performance practice and technique, and critical thinking. We also provide vital services to Hunter College via our many introductory music courses and our large performing ensembles.

Theater

The Theatre Department at Hunter College offers a BA in Theatre, an MA in Theatre, and an MFA in Playwriting. We believe in the importance and benefits of integrating critical study with actual practice. The courses include history, theory, acting, directing, design, production, puppetry, musical theatre, and other areas of the faculty?s expertise. In addition to offering academic and practical courses, each semester the department presents productions, readings, and performance projects. Situated in New York City and through our accomplished faculty members, we also connect our students with its vibrant theatre scene.

Our BA program offers students the opportunity to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the art form within a liberal arts context. Our MA program, with a small number of required courses and a diverse selection of electives, accommodates the students? various backgrounds and career goals and helps them continue with their professional theatre work or advanced academic degrees. Our MFA program focuses on helping writers hone their voice and aesthetic while taking risks and experimenting with form. Students study with award-winning writers, working theatre professionals, and esteemed guest artists in a program that offers intensive, hands-on writing workshops and fosters a collaborative, close-knit artistic community.
