The Aspen Police Department is currently hiring for the position of Community Response Officer. Candidates are required to complete the NTN Fireteam exam and PSSA.
Salary Information:
Hiring Range: $30.48/hour - $34.29/hour
Salary Range: $30.48/hour - $45.72/hour
*Up to $3,000 Sign On Bonus May Be Available*

Position Summary: As a non-sworn member of the Aspen Police Department, you will support our community by performing a variety of public safety and animal safety functions, consistent with the organization's values and mission statement.
Supervision Exercised and Received: This position is supervised by the Community Response Supervisor with the general guidance of the Assistant Police Chief of Administration.


Essential Job Functions:
The Community Response Officer interacts with the community in the capacity of care, community relations, special assignments,tasks from medical emergencies, educational opportunities, primary response to traffic collisions and application of the understanding of the law to support during local events and as a part of the incident command structure in the event of an emergency or large-scale events.
Community Relations
Provides community outreach by assisting with the following public outreach events: Picnic in the Park series, "Cops and Cocoa" events, and the "Bike Rodeo" for school students. Assists with classroom safety instruction. Distributes educational information related to public safety and code enforcement. Participates in bike auctions and provides public fingerprinting services. Assists the public with motorist assistance such as vehicle lockouts, jump starts, and stuck cars. Clears vehicles for VIN inspections through CCIC/NCIC and/or Spillman Mobile CAD.


Community Driven Emergency Response
Responds to emergency calls for the following: ambulance calls, injury traffic collisions, fires, medical emergencies, alarms, and other hazards. Provides appropriate assistance or care as dictated by any of the following types of calls: first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, hazard assessment, and traffic control. Drives in an emergency capacity (lights/sirens) in police vehicles. Drives ambulances (lights/sirens) to assist with medical emergencies. Assumes spontaneous incident command roles as appropriate.
Investigations and Court Testimony
Investigates and performs enforcement as appropriate related to calls for the following services: traffic accidents; code violations; wildlife or domestic animal control; cold theft cases, smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide alarm response; lost and found property, and parking. Completes all necessary citations, reports, and documentation. Ability to be well-prepared, punctual, accurate, and composed when testifying in court.
Incident Command
Contributes to the planning of large-scale special events such as the 4th of July parade, foot and bicycle races, holiday celebrations, concerts, and firework shows. May assist with ICS roles on assigned incidents, VIP incidents, or assist with incident roles of spontaneous events.
Special Assignments
Supports department goals by contributing to the following special assignments: neighborhood speed studies, major crime investigative assistance, traffic pattern studies, and radar trailer use.


Animal Control
Responds to domestic animal and wildlife complaints. Address and manage situations of vicious domestic animals and sick wildlife. Provides and assists in the management of safety perimeter around in-town bear/moose incidents to prevent public/wildlife danger. Traps and releases various unpredictable wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, bats, etc.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: 1 year of experience in customer service
Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient in the following areas, Microsoft Word, Outlook (Email), and a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.
Proficient Spillman or ability to become proficient within six months.
Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of the start date.
Training: CPR/First Aid (or achievable within the first month). Must possess or be able to obtain certification of ICS100, ICS200, NIMS IS700, and NIMS IS800 within the first year. Emergency driving training (EVOC) is attainable within the first year.
NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
NOTE:This position requires the candidate to satisfactorily pass a criminal background check, physical examination, polygraph test, drug test, and psychological examination upon hire.
Position Type and Work Hours:
Regular full-time. May work four 10-hour shifts per week different from standard business hours and/or may vary from week to week.
Evening and weekend hours will be required in addition to or instead of normal hours. May be required to work weekends and nights for special assignments.
Holidays may be required.
May be required to work overtime in emergencies in addition to or instead of normal hours
Work Environment:
Indoors: Office environment.
Outdoors/Off-Site: Conducts patrol and investigations, responds to calls, attend court, meetings, and trainings. Exposure to a variety of adverse weather conditions, temperature changes, and the presence of vehicular traffic and pedestrian flow. Patrol of the City occurs in all types of environmental conditions at all hours of the day. Potential for exposure to calls for service involving dangerous/noxious conditions including fire, gas, hazardous materials, human-caused violence, and infectious diseases including bloodborne pathogens.
Physical Demands:
Lifting & Carrying: Lift up to 50 lb. people, equipment, etc., unassisted.
Physical: This position requires a full range of body movements. Sitting, walking, reaching, handling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Three-dimensional vision and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
Exposure: Exposure to a variety of temperatures, adverse weather conditions, and the presence of vehicular traffic and pedestrian flow. Patrol of the City occurs in all types of environmental conditions at all hours of the day. Exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other pathogens and diseases.
Emergency Response: May be exposed to life-threatening situations when responding to emergency calls.
Fitness for Duty Testing: Officers must participate in Fitness for Duty Testing every two years unless otherwise noted. Testing includes: Assisting in Maneuvering Objects/Persons to Safety (lifting 50 pounds from the floor to knuckle height, 5X unassisted), dragging a person to safety (ability to drag 150 pounds for 30 feet, unassisted), and ascending, and descending 5 stairs (repeated 10X).
